Long-term potentiation expands information content of hippocampal dentate gyrus synapses

Introduction

Synapses on the same dendrite that receive input from the same axon are the same size.
Segments of reconstructed dendrites in the Middle Molecular Layer of Dentate Gyrus analyzed for presynaptic connectivity (solid yellow) revealed that most of the axons (green) made synapses with just one dendritic spine. However, occasionally an axon (white) made synapses with two of the dendritic spines (blue); these are referred to as same dendrite/same axon (SDSA) pairs. The similarity of the spine head volumes of these pairs was influenced by activity and was less than previously observed in Area CA1. [Scale cube 1 μm3]

Provided here are the data and software described in the article entitled "Long-term potentiation expands information content of hippocampal dentate gyrus synapses", published in PNAS.

The gzipped tar file dentate-gyrus-spine-analysis-2018-1.tar.gz contains the output text files from Blender Reconstructions of EM Data + accompanying Python analysis scripts. For more details about how the data were collected and analyzed, please refer to the article.

To extract the contents of gzipped tar file, issue the command:
tar zxvf dentate-gyrus-spine-analysis-2018-1.tar.gz which will create a folder named dentate-gyrus-spine-analysis-2018-1 in the current directory.
